While the scars in our hearts has not healed from losing Evangelist Sonny Okosuns, Sammy Needle, and Elder Steve Rhodes another vibrant and popular musician,Chief Oliver De Coque has been lost. I gather he died on Friday night. I am a sucker for good music especially those ones that identify where am from. i love high life, fuji music, 9ja music, hip hop, rock, pop, e.t.c. I grew up listening to highlife especially Oliver's music and watching his music videos, i even remember "rotate baby rotate", "mbiri o ibiri kam biri.......", "onwere nkwu mmo ne timkpu o........nukwu mmo puta obodo agbawa oso................." damn i can go on and on. I also remember watching him on certain evenings on NTA performing, Biri kam biri, olisa ka anyi nayo, people's club, Otimkpu, all fingers are not equal e.t.c.
As a kid i was intrigued by his permed hair and beards, i used to tell my mum with all serious analysis that he had to be Okonkwo's (Pete Edochie in things fall apart) brother, she would laugh untill she had tear rolling down her eyes.
Forget prince, Oliver de Coque made me get my first (well) and only guitar as a child, never gave my dad any moment of rest till i finally got mind and on those special evenings when he performed on NTA i would do my rendition in the living room and have my parents screaming "shut up and sit down young woman".
Just some weeks ago prior to d'banj's(Importer, exporter KOKOWATER) new track igwe, i made a joke on my show that d'banj wanted to take over music business from 2shots, Niggar RAW, and illbliss, and pweety soon would join Oliver de Coque reading out from a piece of paper hailing business merchants. So you can only imagine the shock i felt, it was like a thunderbolt! I cried profusely, the people around me started asking if i was related to him or if i knew him. You don't have to know anyone to feel the pain of losing some one. He inspired me, he entertained me! Let me shock you even further- i had plans to have him perform on my wedding day (whenever that is!lol) that is how much i appreciated him.
Shame on you death!!!! He looked all so strong at the Nigerian Music Award in Imo state last month. May God rest his soul because he is with you o' lord!
